YOUR FIRST BREATH UNDERWATER: THE PADI BASIC FREEDIVER COURSE

If you have never tried freediving before, this entry-level course is designed precisely for you. Over two days you will move at your own rhythm from the theory of breath-hold to your first immersion in the calm, crystal-clear waters of Malta. No prior experience is needed — just a sense of curiosity and a desire to discover a quieter, more personal way of exploring the sea.

DiveBase instructors will guide you through static and dynamic apnea exercises in a controlled pool environment before taking you into the open water. You will learn how to prepare your body and mind, fine-tune your finning technique, and experience the unique sensation of gliding weightlessly along the rocky Maltese coastline. By the end of the course you will be able to comfortably dive to a depth of 10 metres and will hold an internationally recognised PADI Basic Freediver certification.

WHY MALTA BECOMES A FREEDIVER’S PARADISE

Malta sits at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, blessed with exceptional underwater visibility that often exceeds 30 metres and water temperatures that stay inviting from May right through to November. The archipelago’s geology — dramatic cliffs, caves, arches and drop-offs — creates natural playgrounds for freedivers of every level. You can swim through narrow chimneys, glide over seagrass meadows where cuttlefish hover, and meet schools of amberjack just a short swim from the shore.

Because many of the best spots are reachable directly from the rocky coastline, you spend less time on boats and more time in the water. DiveBase has spent years mapping these inshore reefs and secret swim-throughs, so your sessions are always tailored to the day’s conditions. Whether you prefer sun-drenched shallows for relaxed training or deep blue drop-offs for a personal challenge, Malta offers a rare mix of accessibility and variety that few destinations can match.

THE DIVEBASE APPROACH TO COMFORT AND PROGRESSION

Freediving is as much a mental discipline as a physical one, and the team at DiveBase places your psychological comfort at the very centre of every course. Small group sizes — typically no more than four students per instructor — mean you receive constant, personalised feedback. The pace is never rushed; you are encouraged to listen to your body, to recognise its signals, and to build confidence layer by layer.

Drawing on a deep partnership with the world-renowned Y-40® deep pool and a long history of training freedivers of all backgrounds, DiveBase has developed a teaching style that blends rigorous safety protocols with a genuinely warm Mediterranean welcome. Every session begins with relaxation and breathing exercises that set the tone for mindful exploration. You will find no pressure, no ego, just a supportive space where your personal limits are respected and gently expanded.

  • Maximum 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio
  • In-water sessions adapted to your energy and mood
  • Dedicated mental preparation and breathwork before every dive
  • Full safety equipment and trained safety freediver always present

BEYOND THE COURSE: GUIDED FREEDIVING AND COMMUNITY

Once you hold a certification, the journey does not stop. DiveBase organises weekly guided freediving excursions for certified divers who want to keep practising their skills, discover new locations, and share the experience with like-minded people. These informal sessions are the perfect way to build your depth and distance gradually while enjoying Malta’s coastline from a local’s perspective.

Joining the outings also connects you to a growing community of freediving enthusiasts. You will trade tips on equalisation, swap stories about memorable encounters with marine life, and find buddies for your own independent training. Many visitors return season after season, turning a single course into a lasting friendship with the Maltese sea — and with the people who love it as much as you do.
