TICK MALTA OUT OF YOUR BUCKET LIST!

The richness and diversity of dive sites in Malta, Comino and Gozo make it a great diving destination suitable for all levels. Beginners as well as expert freedivers may train on ropes and safely dive on the diverse dives sites including lively reefs, wrecks, cave systems reaching them via land alongside with the Team and directly by sea casting off the marina, with the same comforts of Y-40® .

the y-40® touch in every dive

DiveBase Malta builds every session around the Y-40® method — a refined, holistic approach to freediving born from decades of deep-water training and competition. You will notice it immediately in the way our instructors teach breathing, equalisation and finning techniques. The Y-40® touch means that even your fun dives carry an educational flow: you work on body awareness, CO₂ tolerance and hydrodynamic efficiency while exploring Malta’s underwater landscapes. It is not a rigid school drill but a constant, gentle upgrade of your comfort in the blue.

Our team integrates mental preparation and visualisation exercises into the briefings, helping you conserve oxygen and stay present during each descent. Many returning guests tell us their personal bests happen almost by accident on a line dive over a wreck or a reef wall — that is the Y-40® effect. By blending technique, safety habit and the pure joy of freediving, we turn a simple shore or boat excursion into a meaningful progression step. This philosophy flows through all our packages, whether you stay a day or dive with us weekly.

learn and grow with our freediving courses

DiveBase Malta runs structured freediving certification courses year-round for all levels — from the first breath-hold experience to advanced master programs. We deliver internationally recognised certifications (such as AIDA, SSI or CMAS) and also offer exclusive Y-40® progression workshops for those who already hold a card and want to deepen specific skills. The small-group format (often 2 to 4 divers per instructor) guarantees you receive constant feedback and never feel lost in a crowd.

Total beginners can join a Try Freediving half-day in shallow, sheltered water to discover the sensation of a clean duck dive and a relaxed static breath-hold. Open Water and Advanced courses run over two to four days and include equalisation labs, rescue drills and multiple open-line sessions in Malta’s clearest spots. Master and instructor-level training follows a customised calendar; just contact us with your goals and available dates. Every course includes full equipment rental, transport from the dive centre and a dedicated buoy system, so you only focus on your breath.

For freedivers who live in Malta or stay several weeks, we design long-term mentorship paths — a series of follow-up sessions that build upon your course, progressively increasing depth and complexity. Many loc-dive package and schedule regular top-ups every weekend.

dive sites you can’t miss

From our base in St. Paul’s Bay you reach an extraordinary variety of freediving playgrounds within minutes. A shore entry at Cirkewwa lets you glide over the vibrant, boulder-strewn reef and descend to the P29 patrol boat wreck, often surrounded by amberjacks and barracuda. Just across the channel, Comino’s Blue Lagoon and Santa Marija Caves offer dramatic light beams and swim-throughs perfect for intermediate and advanced freedivers working on depth adaptation.

Gozo adds another dimension: the iconic Blue Hole leads into a natur metres into the vast Azure Window arch (now a spectacular underwater rubble landscape). On the south-coast boat runs we visit deep pinnacles and sheer drop-offs where visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres and large pelagics cruise by. Our guides know the exact entry points, currents and surface-protection spots, so your session stays safe and serene. We pair each site with the right discipline — line diving, fun reef cruising, or a technical training set — so you always get the maximum out of Malta’s water.

equipment, seasons and everyday comfort

DiveBase Malta maintains a fresh fleet of freediving-specific gear: long-blade carbon and fiberglass fins, low-volume masks, smooth-skin wetsuits in multiple thicknesses and properly calibrated neck weights. When you rent with us (€10 per day), you receive disinfected, well-fitting equipment every morning, and you can store your personal kit in our overnight deposit free of charge. A private washing and sanitising area means your suit and fins are clean and ready for the next session without any hassle.

Malta’s warm season extends from May to November, with water temperatures hovering between 20°C and 27°C — no drysuit ever needed. Winter freediving is a local secret: the sea stays a pleasant 15–16°C, surface conditions are often glassy, and the dive sites are virtually empty. We run excursions all twelve months, adjusting exposure protection and session length to the season. Morning sessions usually catch the best light and calmest surface, while afternoon dives treat you to dramatic sunrays slanting through caves and wrecks. Ask our team about the current conditions and we will schedule your training or fun dive at the optimal time and spot for that day.

The great advantage of diving in Malta are short distances from dive sites and dive center permitting you, your family and diving biddies to plan extra activities after your diving.
Visit Valletta, the Fortress city, Mdina the Old capital, lay and rest at beach under the warm sun or continue the adventure with other sports and activities. Ask DiveBase Team for further info and details to plan at best your Diving Holiday.
