Malta’s waters are an open-air museum of maritime history, with an extraordinary concentration of wrecks accessible to divers of all levels. The famous Um El Faroud, a 115-metre Libyan oil tanker scuttled in 1998, lies upright at a depth of 18 to 36 metres, offering dramatic swim-throughs and a thriving artificial reef. Just off the coast of Ċirkewwa, the P29 patrol boat sits perfectly intact on a sandy bottom at 33 metres, ideal for advanced divers seeking a straightforward yet captivating penetration dive. Each wreck has been carefully prepared to ensure safety, with cut openings and clear pathways.
The shallower wrecks like the Tugboat Rożi or the Xatt l-Aħmar Reef wrecks provide excellent conditions for less experienced wreck explorers. The Rożi tugboat, scuttled as a filming set for the movie “Uomini e navi”, now lies at just 20 metres, encrusted with sponges and surrounded by schools of damselfish and bream. The central Mediterranean acts as a crossroads for both western and eastern species, meaning divers can encounter groupers, barracudas, moray eels, and sometimes even tuna passing in the blue. Macro lovers will find communes of nudibranchs, octopus, and cuttlefish hiding among the posidonia seagrass meadows. The clarity of the water, often exceeding 30 metres, turns every beam of sunlight into a spotlight on the vibrant parrotfish and cardinalfish darting through the rocks.
Seahorses, a symbol of Malta’s conservation efforts, are spotted seasonally in sheltered bays, while flying gurnards and John Dory add an exotic touch to shallow sandy dives.
